Catheter ablations for wpw?

6 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

Yes: Catheter ablation is considered a first line therapy for symptomatic WPW syndrome. It's highly effective in the majority of cases. It's generally safe with a low incidence of serious complications and since WPW can (rarely) result in sudden death, the benefit of ablation justifies the small risk.

Very effective.: Wpw is a short-circuit of the normal heart conduction pathways due to abnormal heart tissue (usually present since birth). There is a small area that, if removed, would Prohibit the circuit from conducting and therefore block the svt. The catheter tip generates rf energy to scar the heart tissue in a small area, which prevents it from conducting electricity.
