Immediately: Overall the ablation procedure may take 3-4 hours to complete. The goal of the procedure is to eliminate the extra electrical pathway responsible for wpw. Once that pathway is eliminated, there is no longer a risk of rapid heart rates. There is a small risk (about 5%) of the problem returning such that at least one follow up evaluation is recommended.

WPW ablation: The procedure can take several hours although sometimes it is much shorter. Afterwards the patient may take a few weeks for rhtym(s) to settle down. Sometimes the first ablation isn't completely successful and the patient has to have additonal procedures.
