Many Years (!): Hi Sam64; I'm a trauma surgeon. Here's our training: College = 4 years Medical school = 4 years Residency = 5-7 years Fellowship = 1-2 years In medical school (and through residency) we take a series of 3 tests for licensing called the USMLE in addition to medical school tests. In residency we take a test each year. Then, we take a board certification exam that is part written and part oral.
