If appropriate: Most trauma surgeons are well skilled in laparoscopic procedures. However, in many trauma situations, time is of the essence to save a life. It may be more appropriate at those times to do an open procedure to get the situation under control quickly, rather than the slower more meticulous work with laparoscopes.
