Pelvic exam: A pelvic exam is an uncomfortable exam both physically and sometimes mentally for some patients. It should not cause pain. If it did you should take to the health care provider who did the exam to make sure that they know. They need to look for the reason.

You're in charge: First and foremost, know that you are in charge. You need to voice your concerns and fears with your MD. He or she should then be able to talk you through it. Keep breathing, otherwise you will tense up and make it more uncomfortable.

Look and feel: We use speculum (duckbill thing) to separate vaginal walls so we can see the vaginal canal&the cervix. It also allows us to place things in the vagina/cervix such as swab/brush for Pap smears (that take the superficial, shedded cells in cervix/vaginal for exam) and instruments for biopsy. We do the bimanual and rectovaginal exams to feel if there is any abnormal masses, tenderness, or scarring
