A lot: A pelvic exam is an uncomfortable part of being a woman. The goal of the pelvic exam is to look at the vulva, vagina and cervix, and ensure there are no problems. That is done with a speculum. The uterus and ovaries are then palpated to evaluate for any large masses. The entire exam is usually less than 5 min.

A pelvic exam is recommended for females, what about for males?

Good question: Men do not much pelvic content as their organs of reproduction are external. The prostate gland, which only males have, is behind the lining of the pelvis, and can and should be examined rectally in men.
