Wrong antibiotic: If you truly have a bacterial tonsillitis, then azythromycin (zithromax) is not a good antibiotic. If you have not had a culture of the tonsil, using any antibiotic is a leap of faith. Furthermore, if you are not allergic to penicillin, Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a better drug to chose as an empirical antibiotic. Zithromax has no effect against NTHI, a common bacterial cause of tonsillitis. Get a culture.
