How can we be sure whether we have type 1 or type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 vs 2 diabetes: Usually overweight patients have type 2, and underweight patients have type 1 (especially if they are actively losing weight, as children & teens with type 1 do). But you can also prove this with a few lab tests. Ask your doctor to run a C-peptide test. This measures how much Insulin your pancreas makes, and is not skewed by Insulin shots. A very low level (sometimes zero) indicates type 1.
