Rule out pregnancy: The first thing to do is to rule out pregnancy. Unless you have been completely sexually abstinent for at least 9 months, the scenario you describe is most consistent with a miscarriage (incomplete spontaneous abortion). An inexpensive home pregnancy test can be purchased at a drug store, but should be confirmed by a lab. If you are not pregnant, then you have dysmenorrhea. See a gynecologist.
