Are whitening products more effective on teeth with certain stain colors?

Yes: Intrinsic yellowing usually responds pretty well to otc tooth whitening products, especially if it's not too severe. Extreme brown or gray discoloration (often caused by tetracycline exposure during childhood) is more challenging and less easily treated by bleaching technology, sometimes requiring more invasive restorative dentistry to be fully rectified.

Simple solution: See a dentist for professional teeth whitening without laser, followed by home whitening system with custom trays for the long term effect. You will be surprise regardless of the stain colors. You can use over the counter products, however, they are not so effective. Note: there is no evidence based dentistry or scientific research to support that any "laser" have an effect on teeth whitening.
