A member asked:

Hi docs, is it true that psychologists and/or psychiatrists are able to treat pedophilia?

Yes: Both are trained to treat a wide variety of mental illnesses and/or personality disorders, or in this case pedophilia. Treatment for pedophilia is very specialized and usually goes better with a combination of individual and group psychotherapy, coupled with monitoring by an outside source (P.O., Social Services, Courts) if the pedophile has offended. PX for cure is guarded, statistically.

Pedophilia has a: poor prognosis rate. Mental health and social work professionals try to help people control and contain this behavior. 12 step programs and other group support programs can be helpful. Many professionals believe that someone who molests children is at best in recovery but that it does not go away. Peace and good health to all.
