MD vs PhD: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who completed 4 years of medical school as well as 4 year psychiatry residency. They can precribe medication and do psychotherapy in every state. Psychologists have advanced degrees either masters or doctorate and are trained in psychotherapy primarily as well as research. Most phobias don't need meds so both can help. I prefer 2 disciplines to collaborate.

Therapy & Medication: Psychiatrists have a degree in medicine (md) and psychologists have a doctoral-level degree in psychology (pH.D. Or psy.D.). Psychiatrists can prescribe medications, while in most states psychologists cannot. Psychologists treat phobias teaching practice of relaxation and exposure in psychotherapy sessions. Psychiatrists prescribe and adjust medication to improve symptoms. Some do psychotherapy.

Both : Both the psychologists and psychiatrists treat phobias. However, psychologists treat phobias without medication, in other words they use psychotherapy to treat phobias. On the other hand, psychiatrists use medication to treat phobias if the symptoms are severe enough to warrant medication. However, Psychiatrist tend not to do that much therapy.
