Cervical fusion : The plates and screws used in a cervical spine fusion are titanium and will last a lifetime. They are tested at 10 million cycles of stress and are engineered to withstand breakage even in a high speed motor vehicle collision. Your head will not fall off your shoulders.

Till you fuse : The plate and screws are there to hold the bones still till you fuse which typically takes about 3 months. After that they are not providing support. If you solidly fuse they will last well beyond your lifetime. If the fusion fails the screws will most likely loosen or break in a year or two. In that case you may need additional surgery. Ask your surgeon if you are fusing well.

No worries: The instrumentation is needed to help stabilize the spine until the fusion occurs (3-4 months). After that, the instrumentation is very unlikely to fail.
