People always warn me not to get carpal tunnel surgery, cause someone they know got worse from it. docs say effective, but i'm confused/nervous! why?

No confusion: If indicated have nerve ( median ) compression with correct diagnosis ( and tests ) will have excellent out come , is a low risk out patient surgery.. Speak to your own doctor if needed go for second opinion , not form lay people as you did . You do not know what purpose they had surgery and the indication for surgery for them.
