Etiology of insomnia: What is the cause of your insomnia? How does your doctor explain it? Ambien (zolpidem) not the best choice for many, and no surprises here. Prior to trying multiple meds, why not figure out what is occurring and treat to underlying problem directly instead of throwing meds at it.

True Cause: Sleeping pills are not the answer for most people. The underlying cause of your insomnia needs to be evaluated. Most often improper sleep hygiene is a culprit. Also, other medical of psychological problems need to be treated as well. A sleep doctor can evaluate your insomnia, discuss proper sleep hygiene with you and use a sleep diary to help manipulate your sleep schedule to treat your insomnia.

Helps some, not all: Ambien (zolpidem) and similar hypnotics help some but not all people with insomnia. Persistent insomnia warrants a more careful review of sleep hygiene, and more medical history and evaluation. It is not uncommon though for insomnia to be scappy and difficult to treat with the first effort.
