Possible croup: By far most coughs in 2 year olds are simple viral infections that do not need any medication. If the cough sounds like a barking seal or dog then it may be croup which is a special viral infection in the vocal chords and is treated by your doctor with steriods. If he has a fever then you also might consider pneumonia.

Viral infection: Usually a viral infection can cause cough at this age but you expect to see runny nose and sneezing too. If it's an isolated cough at this age always be sure there isn't any foreign body any where in the respiratory tract.
