Depends: It depends on the abnormality that was found. Most all of the pre-cancerous changes that can occur are due to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is transmitted sexually. If the abnormality was inflammation or glandular changes then there may be other causes

Cervical smear : Abnormal cervical smear results mostly are due to changes caused by HPV virus . Sometimes thrush or similar infections can show inflammation on smear results but they are not a big problem and can be treated easily.
