Many variables.: The prognosis of surgery for the cauda equina syndrome depends upon the original cause of the nerve root impingement, the severity of the damage and the duration of the nerve compression. The shorter the duration and less the degree of nerve compression, the greater the likelihood of recovery and the quicker the resolution of nerve symptoms. Ask your neurologist or neurosurgeon about these issues.
