A member asked:

What would happen if you rub your eyes? for along time until it hurts or just a long time?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: In the short term, probably nothing. However, if you rub your eyes chronically, you can cause problems with the cornea (the surface of the eye), as well as cause the eyelid tissues to weaken. Additionally, you can cause premature liquifaction and detachment of the vitreous gel inside the eye, which can then sometimes lead to retinal tears or detachment.
