You won't know: You won't know unless you develop symptoms and at that point it is too late. If you had a significant exposure to saliva (bite etc) you should get a series of Rabies Vaccine and rabies immune globulin. Hyenas can carry rabies and are usually without symptoms, so if you had a significant exposure you should get the vaccine series.

Rabies - Ethiopia: Retrospective Studies in Ethiopia showed that 89.83 % of rabies cases were in dogs, 5.34% in cats, 2.9% in cattle. Wild animals to include HYENA's, goats, jackals, cheetah, mongeese & cerval cats made up at total of 1.93% cases. There is a strain of rabies in Ethiopia which presents with remission of symptoms – so that an infected animal may appear healthy. If you have had hyena contact get seen.
