Very uncommon: It's very uncommon, especially in the United States. According to the CDC (http://1.usa.gov/1pHeqhR), "in 2013, 49 states and Puerto Rico claimed 5,865 cases of rabies in animals and 3 human rabies cases to CDC." That said, rabies is a terrible disease that is almost universally fatal. Any possible exposure to rabies requires emergent evaluation and possible treatment with early vaccination.

Uncommon: Rabies is quite rare but it also depends on where you are. Not all a animals can transmit the disease. the reason you hear some much about it is that is a fatal disease that can be prevented with proper immunization.
