When necessary: We don't routinely do breast ultrasounds, like we might do with screening mri. Ultrasound is really only helpful if you feel something in the breast, or mammogram shows a new abnormality. Otherwise, they are just not routinely done.

There is a growing: trend to perform screening ultrasounds in addition to mammography for patients with mammographically dense breasts due to the decreased sensitivity of mammo in that scenario, so talk to your doc to see if it is appropriate in your case. There are no consensus guidelines on this at this point.
