Etiology: Hi. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, and type 2 is no. There are autoantibodies associated with type 1 (GAD-65, ICA-512 = IA-2, insulin, zinc transporter-8 autoantibodies), that if positive, confirm type 1. Some type 1's can be autoantibody negative.
