I was wondering what would a dentist do with a chipped tooth?

Chipped tooth: A restorative dentist will repair it, that is what we do, the severity of the "chip" will determine which method is most appropriate, from a simple filling to more complex treatment which might include a partial or full coverage crown. Don't put off the treatment, time lapse will only complicate the treatment.
