In general, aging can cause some memory loss, but other health problems (malnutrition, heart disease, depression, etc), inactivity, lack of mental stimulation & social isolation affect memory. The elderly typically have more health problems, less exercise & less social support than younger people. Keep your memory sharp w/ exercise (mental & physical), a balanced diet & by maintaining friendships.

Short answer: No: Memory loss is not a part of normal aging. As we age our speed of thinking slows and we have to practice more or pay more attention but the ability to form a memory is retained in older adults with a normal brain. There are many illnesses that cause mermory problems: dementia, depression, diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disease and others. If memory loss is affecting function, see your doctor.
