Neuropsychological: This can be more difficult than it seems and usually requires neuropsychological evaluation by a neuropsychologist, simple measures such as the mini-mental status exam mmse or usually insensitive to this differential but early detection is important for treatment. Since expected memory levels depend on age, and your normal abilities, simple screenings often miss decline in intelligent individuals.

Need to assess: There is no simple answer to this. Worries about memory can indicate the presence of other illnesses like depression. Many common illnesses like low thyroid or over the counter sleeping medicines can cause memory problems. See your pcp for an evaluation. If there is functional decline an occupational therapist can also be helpful for an evaluation.
