A member asked:

I am a 75 year old female. i had an mri. i have some memory loss. my mri showed white matter changes slightly greater than my age-but the indication said mild cognitive dysfunction. if it is worse for my age, will i get dementia?

There are no guarantees, but when a person is aware of some memory issues it usually eliminates Alzheimer's disease and supports mild cognitive loss which is much less apt to degenerate into severe dementia. There are some medications available that could help you. I recommend being evaluated by a neurologist or mental health professional for mental status testing and advice.

You need to find out why you have those white matter changes. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and arteriosclerosis are the more common reasons, and they can be treated by your doctor. The changes you have won't go away, but you can slow the process by following your doctor's reccomendations. That could slow the progression to dementia
