Another Injury: There could be another injury to the ankle, including an osteochondral defect, which is a tear in the cartilage of the ankle bone or leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and can often be missed on xrays. An MRI can help to make the diagnosis. If the MRI finds an osteochondral defect, usually a surgical arthroscopy can help to remove the damaged cartilage and allow new cartilage to replace it.
