A healthy mouth: You need to get your teeth checked out for cavities and have any cavities fixed. Your gums need to be healthy prior to getting braces as well so a cleaning is also appropriate.

Need?: Before beginning Orthodontic treatment all infections (tooth and gum/bone) must be resolved. Final restorations should be delayed until after occlusion is corrected. Talk to a qualified Orthodontic Specialist who is trained to work with General Dentist/Periodontist/Endodontist/Oral Surgeon to properly stage your overall care.

Healthy mouth: First you should have a good cleaning and make sure your gums are healthy, no bleeding or inflammation. Next if you have any cavities, they should be treated. Also your dentist or hygienist should give you good oral hygiene instruction

Active disease tx: Any kind of active disease should be treated before braces start. These include cavities, gum disease, preventive measures such as sealants. Any final restorations (such as crowns, implants, veneers) is better to be done after braces. Although I strongly recommend before spending money on any of said treatments, visit an orthodontist.
