Ringing in ear: See an ear nose and throat specialist for head and neck exam and hearing test. Ringing in the ear (tinnitus) is usually the first indication of hearing loss. Hearing loss in just one ear with no occupational or medical reason needs closer scrutiny. If there is no medically or surgically treatable reason for the ringing you are experiencing, your ENT can discuss options to treat the ringing.

TMJ relationship: If your ear doc says nothing wrong with ear, consider TMJ. A common cause of tinnitus is TMJ. If you have other TMJ symptoms (jaw pain, limited opening, joint noises) then treatment of the TMJ may decrease TMJ associated tinnitus.

Maybe not: Ringing in the ear is known as tinnitus. It is most often associated with hearing loss. You should be evaluated with an audiogram and ENT examination. Tinnitus can be eliminated if it caused by a medication or a treatable problem of the middle ear or temporomandibular joint. If hearing loss is confirmed, then masking techniques are most effective at "hiding" the tinnitus so it is not intrusive.
