Diagnosis: Tinnitus or "ringing in the ear" in most cases can not be cured. However, there are a number of causes that can be controlled. Noise exposure is probably the most common cause. But various types of middle ear and inner ear diseases, if controlled, may relieve the tinnitus. Incidentally, the most likely accepted origin of the sound is arising from the temporal lobe of the brain.
