Dry socket: The way to relieve pain for a dry socket is to have your dentist place a special medication in the socket. Then you get relief in minutes to hours. Taking pain medication just masks the pain and not very well. You can take whatever you pain medication you would normally take for a headache. It probably won't help much. See your dentist.

Opioids and dressing: If OTC relievers aren't effective, you may need a stronger prescription pain medication like opioids. Your dentist should clean the tooth socket and fill the socket with a medicated piece of gauze to relief pain.
