What happens during a non-stress test (nst)?

Baby monitoring: A non-stress test is a way of checking on the baby. We listen to and record the fetal heart for 20-30 minutes. We are looking at the baseline heart rate and how the heart rate goes up or down. We are looking at this to see if the baby is getting enough oxygen or if there are other problems with how the baby is doing.

What does a Q wave on a stress test represent?

Dr. Jerry Routh
Internal Medicine 46 years experience
Heart Damage: A "q wave" is seen on an electrocardiogram (ekg) several of which are recorded during a stress test. Q waves may be very small and not carry much significance or may be larger and suggest that heart damage by a heart attack has occured at some point in time. Further testing and imaging of the heart may be required to determine if the Q wave is significant.

How does stress test check or measure oxygenation?

Dr. Michael Fenster
Cardiology 31 years experience
Speciali equipment: An average stress test does not directly measure oxygen consumption. Specialized equipment used with a treadmill (GXT) test can measure oxygen consumption often reffered to as a "v dot o two" measure. A standard GXT measure workload achieved by how far you go and gives a "metabolic equivalent" or "met" or average expenditure to achive that workload. The higher the mets achieved, the better.

Can you explain what happens during a bike stress test?

Dr. Michael Fenster
Cardiology 31 years experience
Exercise: A bike stress test accomplishes the same result as a treadmill exercise test. Both cause you to exercise. This increases the workload on your heart. If there are blockages that limit the flow of blood to the heart muscle then ischemia is produced. This can be detected by the recording equipment and using an echocardiogram (ultrasound) or nuclear imaging improves the tests diagnostiv accuracy.
A 30-year-old member asked:

How will I know what does a stress test consist of and what sre the risks of having the test?

Dr. Kevin Lingle
Cardiology 15 years experience
Depends: Depends on the type of stress test you are having. There are exercise ecg's where you exercise on treadmill and you heart rate is constantly monitored, then tere are exercise nuclear and exercise echocardiograms where you exercise and pictures of your heart are taken before and after exercise, then there ate pharmacological test which pharmacological agents r used to simulate exercise.
Dr. Bennett Werner

Stress tests are very safe. The usual quoted risk for treadmill exercise under a doctor's supervision is 1 death in 100,000.
