No single answer: We still lack a detailed understanding of exactly what autism is, in terms of the parts of the brain affected and the causes for those effects. Researchers continue to explore lots of different leads, and genetics certainly plays an important role. Environmental causes are much more controversial but probably play a role too. It is clear there is not single cause.
