High ALT=cell injury: Alt elevation often means that the liver has been injured. The list of conditions that cause alt elevation is very long. Some conditions are temporary (like many viruses) and some will only get worse unless treated. Your pediatrician will keep running tests until they find an answer or until the alt normalizes. Often a pediatric gastroenterologist will aid in finding the answer.

Hey docs, I am a former (3 year) alcoholic. I got my bloods and ultrasound evaluated for damage, AST, ALT normal on 3 separate tests. Ultrasound shows borderline increased echogenicity which may be w/in limits. Is this damage reversible if sober?
Doc Thoughts on these liver numbers? SGOT(AST) 41 UL in July , 400 UL in Dec. And SGPT (ALT) 79 in July 1000 in Dec. No pain no signs of liver disease, All seems well. May go for ultrasound. Active Marijuana user but No alcohol. Drinks lot of water?
