A member asked:

Hey docs, i am a former (3 year) alcoholic. i got my bloods and ultrasound evaluated for damage, ast, alt normal on 3 separate tests. ultrasound shows borderline increased echogenicity which may be w/in limits. is this damage reversible if sober?

Every person heals at a different rate so it's impossible to speak to your specific situation. However, it's important to note that the liver is capable of healing itself over time. Hepatocytes (liver cells) have an average lifespan of about 5 months and they do regenerate. It's great that you became sober at a young age, as the speed and ability with which we heal decreases with age.
