Could be infection: A viral eye infection, which is contagious, can cause one or both eyes to be very red, itch, swell, and tear (usually a clear discharge). The symptoms may get worse quickly. Cool compresses can help, and an eye doctor may provide eye drops to help symptomatically. A broken blood vessel on the eye surface can look terrible, but is usually harmless. Many things can cause a red eye, so get an exam.
