A member asked:

What does predominantly solid isoechoic mass with sites of cyst and increased vascularity measuring 5.5 x4.5x3.6 in thyroid mean?

Fna: I would have your doctor order a fine needle aspiration of the nodule, this will allow better evaluation of the mass and give cells for the pathologist to examine.

Thyroid scan needed: Further information is needed. How long have you had this? Tender? Weight loss? Cough? Voice change? Heat or cold intolerance? History of thyroid disease? Pmsfx? Still needs thyroid scan with option for immediate biopsy.

Mm?: Hi. I hate to assume, but I assume this is a small nodule 5.5x4.5x3.6 mm? (not cm? that would be a BIG nodule). A nodule that small (in mm) would be too small to do a fine needle aspiration biopsy on. Are your TSH and free T4 normal? If so, I would say do another thyroid ultrasound in a year or so to see if it's growing.

Depends: Is it mm or cm? If they called it a mass, then it might be cm. mm growths are called nodules rather than "mass". Anyway, if cm, I would biopsy it. If mm, I would repeat ultrasound in 1 year and consider biopsy only if it's growing on the subsequent ultrasound. Make sure you know your thyroid function labs before considering biopsy.
