Parasite/vector: Development in the vector is initiated when female sand flies ingest blood containing macrophages infected with amastigotes, small (3–5 μm), immotile and rounded form of the parasite.

Mammals: The sandfly obtains the parasite that causes leishmaniasis from a mammalian reservoir. The immature parasite then undergoes maturation in the sandfly until it is ready to be transmitted to another mammal again, such as a human or a rodent.
