Can you explain if it's possible for a person to have tmj but no pain throughout their entire life?

Yes: There maybe a problem in the TMJ joint but does not manifest itself with pain. Do you have popping/clicking? Does you jaw dislocate? Have you been evaluated? If not, probably should be!

Yes: The most common cardinal signs of TMJ dysfunction are joint pain, limited oral opening and joint noises. Many people have limited oral opening and joint noises with no other symptoms. Patients can have TMJ degeneration on xrays with no symptoms. It's not a problem unless it bothers you. No treatment indicated if no symptoms.

Very common: The jaw-clicking without the presence of pain is common and alone does not mean a TMJ condition or need of treatment. See a medical professional if you experience continuous pain or if the range of motion of your jaw is limited.
