Vit D is important: For the development and calcification of bone. It is also an important compound to prevent and repair oxidative stress from everyday processes. Taking vit d pills are safe and usually the best way to increase vit d levels if they are low. Your goal should be >75nmol/l. During treatment for vitamin d deficiency, it is important to consume at least 1000 mg of calcium per day as well.

Low Vitamin D: Trust your gp. Your vitamin d level is a bit low, but not "too bad." you can take extra vitamin d supplements -- say, 4000-5000iu/day for a couple of months -- and then retest your level. This amount of daily vitamin d is safe.
