Poor relaxation..: Many patients have "outlet constipation". The stool is soft but does not pass easily due to poor relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles that help prevent leakage during lifting, coughing, sneezing, etc. These muscles must relax to have good rectal emptying but in many people do not. Pelvic floor training with a good physical therapist is often effective.
