Inflamed esophagus: Reflux seen on endoscopy implies inflammation of the lower esophagus. In addition to behavior modifications, proton pump inhibitors are recommended. (Prilosec, Nexium, (esomeprazole) Protonix, etc...) The OTC doses are much lower than treatment doses. For treatment, Prilosec would be 40mg twice a day. The OTC dose is 20 mg once a day. The most effective treatment is to raise the head of your bed least 3 inches.
