Long term use: Medicines like Prilosec can have long term consequences including bacterial overgrowth and thinning bones. It often takes a few days to get full benefit from medicines like Prilosec. You may consider using an alternative antacid for occasional heartburn. These can range from Tums and Mylanta to Zantac (ranitidine) and Pepcid. Consult your physician for more information.

Debatable: Not enough space to answer. Concern with long term use of Prilosec is calcium absorption. But for people who need medication, have to take that chance and monitor. Other issue is silent heartburn, you may have issues even on days you feel fine, if never had a check on your GERD, would recommend GI doctor to go over once with your situation as you may not need it or may need more or a scope.
