Semantics: I've treated lots of rotator cuffs over the years and never used that description, but i would assume this is someone trying to describe the location of the tear. The "tear in the cartilage" probably means that the tear is at the insertion of the cuff tendon to the bone, which is the norm. The exception would be a tear in the mid substance of the tendon--a more difficult problem to repair.

Let e explain: The difference is the location both are located in different part of the shoulder join, the tear of the cartilage holding the rotator cuff is harder to diagnose and harder to treat. Please the image.
