Please provide some do's and don'ts on dealing with deviated nasal septum.

Ignore: Get examined. This may be a polyp, hypertrophied turbinate or structure that can be corrected.

Ignore: If the deviation causes nasal obstruction, have it surgically altered. This is a mechanical problem.

Ignore: 95% of the population have a devaited septum! whether it's symptomatic is the key to treatment.

Ignore: Try a breathe rite strip at home. If it improves your breathing you may have nasal valve obstruction.

Ignore: Don't pick at your nose, as it's more sensitive to bleeding on the deviated side.

Ignore: See specialist (an ENT) not all septums require surgery but ones that affect breathing can be fixed.

Ignore: Keep the nose moist with saline, use decongestants and nasal steroids, but surgery is often best.

Ignore: Unless creating breathing problems leave them alone.

Ignore: Do try a nasal steroid spray. Don't spray it toward the septum. Do use saline. Don't use Afrin.

Ignore: See a reputable surgeon and ask for surgical numbers. Don't fall into a doctor's "learning curve".

Ignore: Saline spray, steam your nose, humidifier in the winter or when the air is dry. ?surgery.

Ignore: Irrigate the nose with saline after being outside to help get the allergens off the mucosa.

Ignore: Saline sprays and irrigations can reduce mucosal inflammation exacerbated by a deviated septum.

Ignore: Talk to an ENT specialist who can give you all the options and can do surgery if you want it fixed.

Ignore: If significant obstruction, elective septoplasty may be indicated.
