Hospice care: Difficult to say because the length of time someone with a terminal illness will live can't be known with certainty. Hospice care is an option once it has been decided not to pursue any further active treatment of the illness. Many hospices will only accept a patient when it is believed they have less than six months to live, so that is perhaps a reasonable rule of thumb.

End of life care.: Hospice is meant for those who seemingly at the end of life, although that end can still be many months away. The emphasis of hospice care is not trying to save the life, but to give comfort to the individual as their death approaches. The timing of death is variable - days, weeks, months.
