Reduce inflammation: Do the same thing you would do if any other joint was sore, rest it. Take advil (ibuprofen) (follow pkg directions). Use cold compresses 1st 24 house, then warm compresses. Eat very soft diet (pudding, scrambled eggs, soup, milkshakes, etc). No gum chewing. But most of all, call your dentist for an emergency appointment. Need to determine cause of the pain in order to determine the correct treatment.

TMJ: Self help- avoid: hard crunchy foods, chewing gum, opening widely. Soft diet, moist heat, and otc medications ( ibuprophen) can help. See a dentist who can properly diagnose your condition and provide you with an appliance that can reduce the strain on the joints and muscles. A physical therapist who is trained to treat TMJ can also provide relief.

A few things: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
