Tmj: There are several causes of TMJ including dental, arthritic changes or trauma in joint. For example i've seen college kids, get apples from parents. Tend bite one side then opposite jaw starts hurt. The oral item you mention is safe so it's worth try. Some have bruxism where grind their teeth, sometimes while sleeping( generally due tension or habit). Consult dentist or orthodontist if over doesn'.

Could be: Tmd (temporomandibular dysfunction) can be caused by many things and should be evaluated by a dental specialist. Depending on the cause, most people start with a custom fitted mouthguard to relax jaw musculature and combat bruxism. Evaluation will determine if jaw pain is from disc assembly or musculature.

Make it worse: Store bought night guards usually prevent your teeth from being able to slide around if you grind your teeth at night. If your teeth can't freely move around you will put more stress on your jaw joint complex.

Depends. Worse.: TMJ is variable. Sometimes minor. Sometimes serious. See an expert for advice. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
