What is the function of cecum? what will happen if cecum is removed from the patient's body?

Cecum: The function of the cecum is not fully understood and studies. It's the first portion of the colon which holds the appendix. People can live without cecum and definitely can live without appendix. There are some suggestions that appendix may play a role in providing local and may be even systemic immunity to a certain extent.
